PROPHET ELIJAH PRAYS FOR RAIN

Once, a wicked king named Ahab reigned over Israel. He did not fear God and worshipped an idol named Baal. As a punishment, there was no rain over the land of Israel.

People in the olden days were dependent on rain for growing their crops. Rain makes the plants grow and gives food for the people. Without rain there will be scarcity of food and famine.

There was a prophet of God named Elijah who lived in Israel. After three years and six months, God sent Prophet Elijah to King Ahab to inform him that soon there would be rain in the land. Prophet Elijah found King Ahab and told him he could hear the sound of heavy rain. He also told the king to go and have some food. The land was dry and there was no sign of rain anywhere. But King Ahab believed Prophet Elijah and went to have his food.

Prophet Elijah took his servant and climbed up a mountain called Mount Carmel. Prophet Elijah began to pray. He put his head between his knees and prayed fervently. He believed that God would send rain. So, he sent his servant to look out toward the sea for rain clouds.

Do you know how we get rain?

Have you seen clouds in the sky? There are special types of clouds that produce rain. These clouds are made of water droplets. Within a cloud, these droplets continue to grow. When these water droplets get too heavy to stay suspended in the cloud, they fall to Earth as rain.

Meanwhile, Prophet Elijah’s servant came back with news there was no cloud and the skies were clear. After sometime Prophet Elijah sent the servant to look again. The servant returned again saying that there were no clouds. This happened six times. When the servant went the seventh time, he saw a tiny cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea. Prophet Elijah believed that the tiny cloud was a sign from God that He is about to send rain.

Immediately, Prophet Elijah sent a message to King Ahab to get back home immediately before he got in the middle of a storm! As the sky grew dark with huge storm clouds, Prophet Elijah tucked his cloak into his belt and ran down the mountain. God gave Prophet Elijah special strength that he ran in front of King Ahab’s chariot all the way back to Jezreel where the king lived.

KING ASA TRUSTS GOD

In this lesson we are going to learn a very important lesson from the life of a king named Asa. 

Do you know who a king is? 

Have you heard any stories about kings, queens, princes or princesses? 

A king is a ruler of a country. For most of history, most countries were ruled by kings. The wife of a king is called a queen. A woman who becomes a ruler of a country is also called a queen. The son of a king is called a Prince. The daughter of a king is called a Princess. The country or the land over which the king rules is called a kingdom.

King Asa ruled over the Kingdom of Judah. Asa was a good King. He loved God and did all the right things. The kings who rule over a country have to be watchful, because sometimes the neighbouring countries may try to make a war and take away their land. But during King Asa’s reign, he did not have trouble from any enemy for many years and his Kingdom had peace. Asa was a wise king, so he spent the time of peace that God gave him carefully. He built fences, walls, towers, and gates when the land was quiet and there were no wars. The people of his Kingdom prospered. King Asa had an army of 5,80,000 very brave men.

One day, a man named Zerah from a country called Ethiopia brought a powerful army of one million men and 300 chariots to fight King Asa and the people of the Kingdom of Judah. They gathered at a Valley called Zephathah. A valley is the low lying land between two mountains. King Asa knew that it would be a very tough battle. 

Chariots were carriages or carts that were drawn by animals such as horses. In the olden days, cars, trucks or other modern means of transport were not available. Hence, chariots were used by kings and other important men as a faster way to travel and was also used in warfare. 

King Asa decided to ask God for help. Eventhough King Asa had a great army of mighty men, he put his trust in God. He prayed to God. King Asa told God "Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty.” King Asa pleaded with God to help them  because they have come to fight against a very big army, relying in His name. 

God answered King Asa and helped him to overcome the Ethiopians. Eventhough the Ethiopinas were a very large army and had chariots that would help them to move faster, King Asa and his men could easily chase them. The Ethiopians were defeated and they ran away.

Barzillai is kind to David, Kinder - I, Lesson - 18

BARZILLAI IS KIND TO DAVID

David the little shepherd boy we saw in the previous lesson, grew up and became a king. Once King David was in trouble and he had to walk through the desert for a long time. Then he and his friends reached a place called Mahanaim. They were tired and hungry and needed help. Have you ever been hungry? How do you feel when you are hungry?

In the olden days there were no shops or malls available on the roadside to purchase food and other necessities. Travellers mostly depended on their own provisions or the kindness of the strangers. So David and his friends too faced lots of difficulties when they reached Mahanaim. 

A kind old man named Barzillai heard that David and his friends had reached Mahanaim after travelling for a long time.  Barzillai knew that David and his friends would be hungry and need some food. He also wanted to make them feel welcome and make their stay comfortable.

So, Barzillai brought sleeping mats, cooking pots, serving bowls, wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans, lentils, honey, butter, sheep, goats, and cheese for David and his friends to provide for their needs. King David and his friends was very happy to see his old friend Barzillai. He was also encouraged and strengthened by Barzillai’s help and kindness. King David did not forget Barzillai’s kindness and he promised to protect and honour Barzillai’s children.

DAVID THE LITTLE SHEPHERD BOY

David was a little shepherd boy who lived in a city called Bethlehem. He had seven elder brothers. He took very good care of his sheep and kept them safe. David was very brave and courageous because he knew God was with him.

Sometimes wild animals came from the dense forest to take the sheep and lambs for food. No one can predict from which direction these animals would come. Usually these wild animals would hide behing rocks or bushes and suddenly pounce on the grazing sheep or lamb and carry them away. So David had to be watchful and protect his sheep. 

David never let any of the wild animals carry away his sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried away a sheep from the flock, David went after the wild animal, struck it with a club (a thick stick; also called as a rod) or used a sling-shot and rescued the sheep from its mouth.

David knew that he too had a shepherd who loved him and protected him. He loved God and sang praises to Him. David was very skilled in playing a musical instrument called the “harp.” 

David wrote many beautiful songs when he grew up, which we read in the Book of Psalms in the Holy Bible. God helped David to defeat a big giant called Goliath who tried to scare the Israelite people. 

God was very happy with David, because David always wanted to please God. He was also quick to ask sorry, whenever he made a mistake. God made him the king of Israel when he grew up.

SAUL GOES IN SEARCH OF DONKEYS

Once there lived a man called Kish in Israel. He had a son named Saul. Kish owned a lot of donkeys.  In the ancient days, many animals were reared such as cows, sheep, donkeys, horses and camels. Cow, sheep and goat provided milk and meat. The wool and leather of some animals were used to make dresses and tents for shelter.

Most of the animals including donkeys were used as beasts of burden for transporting people and goods. Hence animals were considered as valuable possessions.

One day Kish, Saul’s father, found that his donkeys had gone missing. So, Kish sent Saul and one of his servants to look for the lost donkeys. Saul and his father’s servant went throughout the land and looked all over the hill country for the donkeys, but they could not find them anywhere. Saul realized that they had been gone quite a long time and was concerned about his father. He told the servant that they had better go back home. His father Kish would be more worried about him than the donkeys if they don’t return home soon.

But the servant wanted to make a last attempt. He had heard that Samuel, the man of God, was in the next town. Samuel was a Prophet of God. In the olden days they were called as “Seers”. Prophets were men of God who had special powers. Maybe he can tell them where the donkeys are, the servant thought. Saul agreed.

Saul and the servant went to the next town to find Samuel. When Saul and his servant finally found Samuel, they got a big surprise when Samuel told them to stop worrying about the donkeys and that they have been found.  Prophet Samuel even invited them for a feast because he had another special message for Saul. God had chosen Saul as the first King of Israel. Prophet Samuel also told Saul exactly what would happen as Saul was travelling back home.

Prophet Samuel told him that he would meet two men by a famous tomb called “Rachel’s Tomb”.  The men would tell Saul that the donkeys had been found and that his father is worried about him. Prophet Samuel also told Saul about few others whom he would meet on the way. Everything happened just like Samuel said it would. Saul also became the first king of Israel.

Ruth helps Naomi, Kinder - I, Lesson - 15

RUTH HELPS NAOMI

There was a man named Elimelech who lived with his wife Naomi in Bethlehem. They had two sons Mahlon and Chilion. Once there was a severe famine in Bethlehem. Famine is when people do not get enough food for long periods of time and it can result in starvation and death. Famine usually occurs when there is lack of rainfall and enough food is not produced because of crop failure. This happened in Bethlehem too. Naomi, Elimelech and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion went to live in a distant country called Moab.

After some years, Elimelech passed away. Naomi’s sons Mahlon and Chilion married women from Moab named Ruth and Orpah.

Soon Naomi’s both sons also died in Moab. Naomi who was a stranger in Moab found herself living alone in Moab with her two daughters-in-law. One day Naomi heard that there was no more famine in Bethlehem and there was enough food for everyone. So, Naomi decided to return to her home town Bethlehem. She wanted good life for her daughters-in law. Naomi told them to stay back in Moab, so they could be taken care of by their relatives. Orpah thought that was a good decision and returned to her relatives.

But her other daughter-in-law Ruth did not want to let Naomi go alone to Bethlehem. So, Ruth went along with Naomi to Bethlehem. Ruth went in search of food for herself and her mother-in- law in Bethlehem. She saw a field being harvested. She asked their permission to gather the grains that fall down and get wasted while being harvested.

Incidentally, that field belonged to a rich man named Boaz. Boaz was a relative of Naomi and Elimelech. He was kind to Ruth and gave food for her and Naomi.

After some time, Boaz married Ruth. The Lord blessed Boaz and Ruth for their kindness.
