Memorization Portion: Psalm 19, Senior - I, Lesson - 10

SENIOR

AGE GROUP: 14 - 15 YEARS

STANDARD (GRADE): IX & X

LESSON – 10

PSALM - 19

To Memorize

1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
    In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
5  It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb.
11 By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
    may they not rule over me.
    Then I will be blameless,
    innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
     be pleasing in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

LESSON – 10

TAMING THE TONGUE (JAMES 3:1–18)

To Memorise:

1.      My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

2.     For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

3.     Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.

Bit in a horse's mouth, the part of the bridle in the horse's mouth which enables the rider
to cue a horse by placing pressure in and around the horse's mouth.

4.     Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.

Rudder in a ship

5.     Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

6.     And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

7.      For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.

8.     But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9.     With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.

10. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

11.  Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?

12. Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

13. Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.

14. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

15.  This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.

16. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

17.  But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

18. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Note to teachers

Author of Psalm 91:

The Jewish doctors consider that when the author's name is not mentioned we may assign the Psalm to the last named writer (i.e. Moses, the author of Psalm 90); and, if so, this is another Psalm of Moses, the man of God. Many expressions used in Psalm 91 are similar to those of Moses in Deuteronomy, and the internal evidence, from the peculiar idioms, would point towards him as the composer. (1) According to the midrash, Psalm 91 was composed by Moses on the day he completed the building of the Tabernacle in the desert. The verses describe Moses' own experience entering the Tabernacle and being enveloped by the Divine cloud.
