LESSON – 12
RAHAB AND THE SCARLET THREAD
The Israelites were travelling from Egypt to Canaan. God had promised the Israelites that he would give Canaan as their home country. But Canaan was ruled by many other kings and the Israelites had to war against them and conquer them. The Lord had chosen Joshua as the leader of Israel to conquer the land of Canaan. Joshua had to conquer the city of Jericho before he could proceed further. So, he sent two men to the city of Jericho.
There was a woman named Rahab who lived in the city of Jericho. She feared the God of Israel. She let the two men stay at her house. But the king of Jericho came to know about that and was not happy. So, he sent his officials to look for them. When the city officials came to Rahab’s house, she hid the Israelite men on her rooftop under stalks of flax. The two men escaped after the officials left.
The Israelite men told Rahab to tie a scarlet thread (a red cord) in her window as an identification, so that they would know where her house was, when they came back to capture the city. As soon as the two men left, Rahab tied the scarlet thread in her window. When the Israelites came back to capture Jericho, they saw the scarlet thread and took Rahab and her family to safety.
