LESSON – 5

ESAU SELLS HIS BIRTHRIGHT

Isaac and Rebekah had twin sons named Esau and Jacob. Esau was a skillful hunter and enjoyed outdoors. He loved to hunt and work outside in the fields. Jacob loved to stay at home and do chores around their tent home.

One day when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came back from the fields. He was very hungry because he could not hunt any animal and had not eaten anything. Esau saw Jacob cooking a delicious red stew, and immediately asked for some stew. But Jacob was not ready to share his stew that easily. Jacob told Esau to give away his birthright in exchange for the stew. Birth right was a special privilege that was given to the eldest son, to receive a major portion of his father's wealth and property.

Esau was so hungry that he didn't mind selling his birthright to Jacob. Esau took a careless decision without thinking about it. Esau swore an oath to Jacob, selling his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate and drank the stew and went away not realizing the big mistake he had done by despising his birthright.

Esau realized his mistake only later when he had to part with all his wealth. Later, Esau had a change of heart and wanted to take back his Birthright and his blessings but he could not get it back. We should be careful not to do anything or take any decision in a hurry without asking God and our parents.
