LESSON – 5

HAGAR AND ISHMAEL

Hagar was the maid servant of Sarai (later called Sarah), wife of Abraham. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky, but as yet he and Sarah did not have a child. Sarah thought to have a child through Hagar, their servant maid and suggested it to Abraham. Abraham accepted and soon Hagar was going to have a child. However, this joyous event turned into a hostile event, as jealousy arose between the two women. Hagar began to look down upon Sarah and Sarah started to ill-treat Hagar.

Art by James Tissot

Hagar ran away from home and fled to a nearby desert. The Angel of the Lord was watching over her and he found her by a spring of water that was beside the way that led to a place called Shur. The Angel asked her why she was there. Hagar said that she was running away from her mistress. The Angel of the Lord told her to return to Sarai and be obedient to her. He told her to name her son Ishmael. He also said that Ishmael would grow up to be a wild man; he would dwell in the midst of all his brethren and there would be constant conflict between him and the people around him.

The water well where the Angel found her would be called “Beer Lahai Roi” which meant “Well of the One Who Lives and Sees Me”. Hagar called the name of the Lord "You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees" because Hagar had seen the Lord, who saw her distress and comforted her in the wilderness. Hagar did as the Lord commanded her and returned home. In due time, she gave birth to her son Ishmael. Abraham was 86 years old at that time.

Picture of a Water Spring in a Desert

Ishmael grew up and Abraham thought Ishmael was going to be his heir. But God appeared to Abraham and told him that he and  Sarah (previously called Sarai) would have a son, Isaac. Isaac would be their heir and the son of promise, through whom all the nations would receive Abraham's blessings. God had a special role for Isaac in the salvation plan of God. The Messiah, Jesus Christ would be born in his lineage.

Art by Grant Romney Clawson

Abraham prayed for Ishmael too. God told him that Ishmael also would be a great man, but not the son of promise. Ishmael's family would become a great nation. His twelve sons would become twelve princes. One day Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of Isaac and she got angry.

Sarah told Abraham to send Ishmael and Hagar away. This made Abraham very sad because Ishmael was his son too. God told him to listen to his wife Sarah and do as was told to him. Abraham gave Hagar some bread and water and sent them away.

Hagar and Ishmael wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. When the water was used up, Hagar kept Ishmael under a shrub and sat down a short distance from him. Hagar started to cry because she didn't want to see Ishmael dying of thirst. God heard the voice of the child. Hagar heard a voice speaking to her from heaven. God told her not to be afraid. God promised her that Ishmael would not die and he would become a great man.

God opened Hagar's eyes and she saw a well of water. She got water for them and they survived. Ishmael did grow up and his descendants became a great nation of people. Ishmael became an archer, a marksman with a bow and arrow. Hagar and Ishmael’s story teaches us that, God keeps a watch over us, cares for us and will provide for our needs whatever situation we may go through.

LESSON – 5

SHIPHRAH & PUAH – THE GODLY MIDWIVES

We learnt in the previous lesson about how Joseph the young boy who was sold into slavery by his brothers became the Second-in-command of Egypt. Later, Joseph's brothers had to visit Egypt because of a famine. Joseph forgave his brothers and asked them to come and live with him in Egypt. Joseph’s family including Joseph’s father Jacob, his brothers and their families left Canaan and went to live in Egypt. The number of men who entered Egypt was about 70. But soon their number increased and in 400 years their number was about 20,00,000.

The Pharaoh who reigned in Egypt during the days of Joseph died and there was a new Pharaoh in Egypt, who did not know about Joseph's contributions to Egypt. He became concerned that there were too many Israelites in Egypt. He feared that in event of war, such a great number of people could easily turn against him and help their enemies. Pharaoh decided to keep the Israelites under control through oppression.

The Israelites were made slaves and were compelled to do heavy labor.  They were forced to build the royal store cities of Pithom and Raamses under cruel conditions. They were treated badly by the taskmasters set over them. However, the more the Egyptians oppressed the children of Israel, the more they grew in number and strength. Pharaoh’s plan didn’t work. But the Pharaoh somehow wanted to control the number of Israelites, so he devised a wicked plan to kill all the Hebrew baby boys.

The Pharaoh commanded the Hebrew midwives named Shiphrah and Puah to kill all the baby boys right after they were born. Midwives are those who help the mothers to deliver their babies. The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the Pharaoh told them to do; they let the boys live.

The Pharaoh was angry and he summoned the midwives and asked them why they had let the boys live. The midwives thought of an answer and told Pharaoh that the Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are stronger and so the babies were born even before the midwives arrived. Pharaoh believed the midwives and their lives were spared from death.

The midwives were brave enough to defy the orders of Pharaoh and saved the baby boys because they wanted to be righteous and do the right thing. They wanted to obey God more than Pharaoh. God was kind to the midwives and their families were also blessed and they became prosperous in the land.

LESSON – 5

ESAU SELLS HIS BIRTHRIGHT

Isaac and Rebekah had twin sons named Esau and Jacob. Esau was a skillful hunter and enjoyed outdoors. He loved to hunt and work outside in the fields. Jacob loved to stay at home and do chores around their tent home.
Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

One day when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came back from the fields. He was very hungry because he could not hunt any animal and had not eaten anything. Esau saw Jacob cooking a delicious red stew, and immediately asked for some stew. But Jacob was not ready to share his stew that easily. Jacob told Esau to give away his birthright in exchange for the stew. Birth right was a special privilege that was given to the eldest son, to receive a major portion of his father's wealth and property.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

Esau was so hungry that he didn't mind selling his birthright to Jacob. Esau took a careless decision without thinking about it. Esau swore an oath to Jacob, selling his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate and drank the stew and went away not realizing the big mistake he had done by despising his birthright.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

Esau realized his mistake only later when he had to part with all his wealth. Later, Esau had a change of heart and wanted to take back his Birthright and his blessings but he could not get it back. We should be careful not to do anything or take any decision in a hurry without asking God and our parents.

JACOB’S DREAM

Once Jacob had to leave his home and travel to a faraway land. Jacob was travelling alone. In the olden days travel was much different. They did not have all the means of transport we have today. Can you name some of the means of transport we use today? In the olden days people would travel on the backs of beasts of burden like horses, donkeys etc. or on the carts drawn by them. But people who could not afford those had to travel by foot.

Jacob was going to his uncle’s house at a faraway place. Jacob was tired after a long travel and went to sleep. Jacob had nothing comfortable to sleep on. He took a stone and kept it as his pillow.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.
While Jacob was sleeping, he saw a dream. In that dream he saw a ladder. The ladder was so tall that it reached heaven and there were many angels on the ladder. Some of them where climbing up towards heaven, while others were coming towards the earth. It would have been such a glorious sight!
Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

More than that, Jacob saw God Himself standing above everything. God spoke to Jacob. God said that he would watch over Jacob, provide for him and help him come back home. Jacob was very happy. God fulfilled his promise. After many years Jacob came back safe to his father's home. He even built an altar on the very place where God gave him the promise in a dream.
