LESSON – 1

THE FIRST SIN

God created Adam and Eve and kept them in the Garden of Eden to take care of it. God gave them many trees with good fruit to eat. But there were two special trees in the middle of the garden. One was the “Tree of Life” and the other was the “Tree of the knowledge of good and evil”. God told them that they can eat the fruit from all the trees in the garden except the fruit from the “Tree of the knowledge of good and evil”, because they will die the day they eat that fruit.

One day a crafty snake * asked Eve, “Did God really tell you not to eat the fruit from any tree in the garden?”. Eve didn’t know that it was really satan who was talking to her through the snake. Eve told the serpent that, they could eat from all the trees in the garden, except the fruit of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because, they would die when they eat the fruit. But the snake told Eve that they would not die and they would become like God knowing the difference between right and wrong, if they eat that fruit.

Eve was tempted to eat the fruit and looked at the fruit on the tree. She found it very beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. She took the fruit and ate it and gave some of the fruit to Adam also. Their eyes were opened and they could understand right from wrong. Adam and Eve, who were innocent like children until then, realized that they were without a dress and felt ashamed. They sewed fig leaves and made dress for themselves. But Adam and Eve began to feel unhappy, since they had disobeyed God. They realised that they had lost the loving relationship with God and they were afraid of him.

When they heard God in the garden, they ran away and hid. God called for Adam. But Adam didn’t answer. God called again. Finally, Adam told God that they hid from him because they were scared. God knew that Adam and Eve had eaten the fruit and disobeyed Him. Adam told God that Eve gave him the fruit to eat. Eve told God that the snake told her to eat the fruit. Whatever reasons they gave, a sin is a sin. God cursed all the three of them - Adam, Eve and the serpent.

God told the snake that he had to crawl on his belly throughout his life and the woman’s seed will crush his head one day. God told Eve that she will have severe pain when she bears a child. Adam will not easily get food to eat. He will have to plant his own garden, toil and sweat for food. From then on, life was never the same. God killed some animals and made leather clothes for them which were made from animal skins. God sent them out of the beautiful garden of Eden.

Even though, Adam and Eve did not die physically that day, they suffered a spiritual death and their disobedience ultimately led to their physical death. The earth was cursed because of man's disobedience and it started to produce thorns and thistles. Every kind of evil, pain, misery and death entered the world because man fell into satan's deception and disobeyed God.

Our world is not the way it is supposed to be, because of the disobedience of man. Much of the goodness of God’s creation was lost when man sinned. But our loving heavenly father wanted to restore his relationship with man. Jesus Christ, the Messiah entered the world as the woman's seed, defeated satan on the cross and restored the relationship between God and man, which he had lost in the garden of Eden.

Memory Verse: But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. Romans 5:15 (NKJV)
