LESSON – 11

THE MEMORIAL STONES

In the previous lessons we saw how Moses was leading the Israelites towards Canaan. Moses became very old and died. After the death of Moses, Joshua took over as the leader of Israel and led the Israelites towards Canaan. They almost reached the promised land but they had to cross the Jordan River before they could take Canaan.

God told Joshua to command the priests to take few steps into the Jordan River and stop there. As soon the feet of the priests touched the waters of the river, the river waters would be cutoff upstream and there would be a dry path in the middle of the river. The priests did just as Joshua commanded them and the waters of the Jordan River turned back. The Israelites crossed the Jordan River through the dry riverbed. The priests who were carrying the Ark of God, stood on the middle of the river bed as the Israelites passed by.

When all the people had crossed the Jordan River, God told Joshua to choose twelve men, one from each tribe and to tell them to take twelve stones from the very place where the priests were standing in the middle of the Jordan. They had to carry them out and pile them up at the place where they camped that night.

Joshua called twelve men and told them what God had told him, to go into the middle of the Jordan and pick up one stone —twelve stones in all, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel and to build a memorial using those stones in the place where they stayed that night.

Joshua also told them the purpose of building that memorial. In the future when the children of the Israelites saw that memorial built with 12 stones, they would ask their parents what those stones meant. Then the Israelites had to teach the children of the time when the Jordan River stopped flowing when the feet of the priests touched the Jordan River and the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant went across. Those stones stand there as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.

The twelve men did just as Joshua commanded them and built a memorial using those stones to remember and thank God for His miracles and deliverance.
