LESSON – 9

GOD REVEALS HIS GLORY TO MOSES

In the last lesson we saw Aaron making golden calf for the Israelites to worship and God’s anger burning against them. The next day Moses went back to God to make atonement for their sins and to ask forgiveness from God. Moses even went to the extent of saying, “God please forgive them or blot out my name from the Book.” God replied to Moses and said that he would blot out the names of only those people who sin against Him. God told Moses that He would not go before them anymore and His Angel would lead them (Exodus 32:30 – 33:3).

When the Israelites heard these words, they removed their jewels and went into mourning. Then Moses took a tent and pitched it at a distance from the camp where the Israelites were staying. He called it the “Tent of Meeting or Tabernacle of Meeting”. Whenever Moses went to the tent of meeting people would get up and stand at the entrance of their tents, till he went inside.

When Moses entered the Tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the door of the Tabernacle and God spoke with Moses from the cloud. Inside the Tent of Meeting the Lord would speak to Moses face to face as one speaks to a friend. After this, Moses would return to the camp. Moses had a helper named Joshua, the son of Nun. Joshua did not want to leave the tent of meeting and he stayed there constantly. (Read about it in Exodus 33: 1-11)

One day Moses said to the Lord, “Lord you have told me to take these people to the promised Land, but you have not told me whom you will send with me.” Then Moses also reminded God that God had told that he had found grace in the eyes of God. Then God assured Moses that His presence would go before them and Moses could be at peace. Then Moses told God, “If your presence doesn’t go with us, don’t make us leave this place”.

Moses also wished to see the glory of God. God promised Moses that He would make all His goodness pass before him and He would call out His name. God also said that He will be gracious to whom He wanted to be gracious and He will have compassion on anyone He wanted to have compassion. God told Moses that he could not see God’s face because no man can see God and live. The Lord told Moses to stand on a nearby rock. God will keep Moses on a cleft on the rock. God’s glorious presence will pass before Moses, but God will cover Moses with His hand till His presence passed by.  Then God will remove His hand and Moses could see the back of God.

The Lord also told Moses to cut two tablets of stone like the first ones he had smashed at the base of Mount Sinai and to write the words that were on the first tablets. Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him. He took in his hand the two tablets of stone. God descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The name with which God revealed Himself to Moses has been translated in The English Holy Bible as "The LORD, the LORD God" which is given in the Hebrew Bible as "YHVH" also referred to as Yahweh or Jehovah (Refer to the notes below)*. Moses bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped God. Moses saw the glory of God!

Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. Moses neither ate bread nor drank water. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, Moses did not know that his face was shining. The Israelites were afraid to come near him. So, Moses put a veil on his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would remove the veil and put the veil back when he spoke with the people.
