LESSON – 9

KORAH AND FOLLOWERS REBEL AGAINST MOSES

We saw in one of the previous lessons that God had told Moses to anoint Aaron as the High Priest. As the High Priest of Israel, Aaron had special privileges as well as important responsibilities. Many years passed since Aaron was anointed, but there were some other leaders in Israel who thought that they should have been given these special responsibilities. Foremost among such men was a man named Korah, from the tribe of Levi who was in fact a cousin of Moses and Aaron. Aaron and his descendants received the priesthood, whereas the other descendants of Levi called the Levites where chosen to assist the priests.

Korah Rebels against Moses:

Korah thought that he should have been chosen for the honourable priestly ministry. He was joined by three other men from the tribe of Reuben named Dathan, Abiram and On. They gathered 250 influential leaders from the Israelites and rebelled against Moses and Aaron. They accused Moses and Aaron of exalting themselves too much. Moses heard it and he fell on his face. Then he spoke to Korah and all his supporters, saying that God would show to them whom He had chosen for the priestly ministry, the next day.

Moses Challenges the Rebels:

Moses told all of them to take their censers (incense burners), put fire in them and put incense before the Lord, so that the Lord could show them whom He had chosen. Moses understood that Korah and his followers were not satisfied with their Levite ministry and assisting the priests, they wanted the priesthood for themselves. Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram to come and meet him. They refused to come saying that Moses was trying to rule over them. They even accused Moses of trying to kill them in the desert by not taking them to their homeland. Moses got upset and told God not to accept their offerings and sacrifices. Again, Moses told Korah and his 250 followers to bring their incense burners before the Lord the next day

 God Pronounces His Judgement:

Korah and his 250 followers prepared their incense burners, lit the fire, put incense on it and they stood before the entrance of the Tabernacle along with Moses and Aaron. Korah had made the entire Israelite congregation to gather against Moses and Aaron. God was angry with the Israelites and He told Moses and Aaron to move away from the congregation so that He could destroy them. But once again Moses interceded for them and pleaded with God asking whether He should be angry with the entire congregation just because one man had sinned. God replied to Moses to tell the Israelites to move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.

Korah, Dathan and Abiram Swallowed Up:

Moses told the Israelites to quickly get away from the tents of Dathan and Abiram and not to touch any of their belongings. All the people moved away from the tents of those three men. Dathan and Abiram came and stood at the entrance of their tents with their family. Moses said that the Lord is going to do an entirely new thing to prove that Moses had not acted on his own. As soon as Moses finished speaking, the ground suddenly split and opened beneath them. Korah, Dathan and Abiram were swallowed up by the ground along with their belongings.

Bronze Covering for the Altar:

Then fire blazed forth from the Lord and burned up the 250 men offering incense, who had followed Korah to rebel against Moses and Aaron. God told Moses to tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron to remove all the 250 incense burners from the fire. The incense burners although were used by the rebels had become holy, since they were brought to the presence of the Lord. Moses wanted to display the incense burners to serve as a warning to the people of Israel. Eleazar collected all the 250 incense burners and the bronze from these burners was hammered into a thin sheet and made into a covering for the altar. This would warn the Israelites that anyone who is not authorized i.e. anyone who is not a descendant of Aaron should not enter the presence of God to burn incense.

God’s Anger and Aaron’s Intercession:

The very next morning the Israelites murmured against Moses saying that they had killed the Lord’s people. The Israelites gathered to protest against Moses and Aaron, but suddenly they saw that the cloud had covered the Tabernacle (the tent where they worshipped God) and the glorious presence of the Lord had appeared. Once again God wanted to destroy the rebellious Israelite people. God’s very purpose for selecting the Israelites was to be holy, but they were repeatedly murmuring and rebelling against God. Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground to ask for God’s mercy on the Israelites. But God had already sent a plague (an infectious disease) and people started to die. Moses told Aaron to quickly take his incense burner place burning coals on it from the altar, lay incense on it, and carry it out among the people to make intercession for them. Aaron ran out among the people, stood between the living and the dead and the plague stopped. 14,700 people died on that day because they had rebelled against God.

The Budding of Aaron’s Rod:

God told Moses to tell the Israelites to bring twelve rods, one for each of the twelve tribes and to inscribe the names of the leaders in those rods. Aaron’s name was inscribed on the rod for the tribe of Levi. God told them to place the rods in the Tabernacle in front of the Ark containing the stone tablets. Moses gave the instructions to the people and each of the twelve tribal leaders brought a rod to Moses including Aaron.

st-takla.org

Moses placed those rods in the Tabernacle. When he went the next day, Aaron’s rod representing the tribe of Levi had produced buds, blossomed and yielded almonds.

Moses brought all the rods out from the Lord and showed it to the Israelites. Aaron’s rod was permanently placed before the Ark of the Covenant in the Tabernacle to end people’s complaints against Aaron.

Memory Verse: Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.  Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. LESSON – 9

GOD REVEALS HIS GLORY TO MOSES

In the last lesson we saw Aaron making golden calf for the Israelites to worship and God’s anger burning against them. The next day Moses went back to God to make atonement for their sins and to ask forgiveness from God. Moses even went to the extent of saying, “God please forgive them or blot out my name from the Book.” God replied to Moses and said that he would blot out the names of only those people who sin against Him. God told Moses that He would not go before them anymore and His Angel would lead them (Exodus 32:30 – 33:3).

When the Israelites heard these words, they removed their jewels and went into mourning. Then Moses took a tent and pitched it at a distance from the camp where the Israelites were staying. He called it the “Tent of Meeting or Tabernacle of Meeting”. Whenever Moses went to the tent of meeting people would get up and stand at the entrance of their tents, till he went inside.

Moody Publishers / FreeBibleimages.org.

When Moses entered the Tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the door of the Tabernacle and God spoke with Moses from the cloud. Inside the Tent of Meeting the Lord would speak to Moses face to face as one speaks to a friend. After this, Moses would return to the camp. Moses had a helper named Joshua, the son of Nun. Joshua did not want to leave the tent of meeting and he stayed there constantly. (Read about it in Exodus 33: 1-11)

One day Moses said to the Lord, “Lord you have told me to take these people to the promised Land, but you have not told me whom you will send with me.” Then Moses also reminded God that God had told that he had found grace in the eyes of God. Then God assured Moses that His presence would go before them and Moses could be at peace. Then Moses told God, “If your presence doesn’t go with us, don’t make us leave this place”.

st-takla.org

Moses also wished to see the glory of God. God promised Moses that He would make all His goodness pass before him and He would call out His name. God also said that He will be gracious to whom He wanted to be gracious and He will have compassion on anyone He wanted to have compassion. God told Moses that he could not see God’s face because no man can see God and live. The Lord told Moses to stand on a nearby rock. God will keep Moses on a cleft on the rock. God’s glorious presence will pass before Moses, but God will cover Moses with His hand till His presence passed by.  Then God will remove His hand and Moses could see the back of God.

The Lord also told Moses to cut two tablets of stone like the first ones he had smashed at the base of Mount Sinai and to write the words that were on the first tablets. Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him. He took in his hand the two tablets of stone. God descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The name with which God revealed Himself to Moses has been translated in The English Holy Bible as "The LORD, the LORD God" which is given in the Hebrew Bible as "YHVH" also referred to as Yahweh or Jehovah (Refer to the notes below)*. Moses bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped God. Moses saw the glory of God!

Moody Publishers / FreeBibleimages.org.

Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. Moses neither ate bread nor drank water. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, Moses did not know that his face was shining. The Israelites were afraid to come near him. So, Moses put a veil on his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would remove the veil and put the veil back when he spoke with the people.

Teacher's Notes: If you want to know more about "YHVH" or the names of God, please refer to Senior Class Lesson - 4, titled "The Names of God"

LESSON – 9

JORDAN RIVER TURNS BACK

After the death of Moses, Joshua took over as the leader of Israel. He was leading the Israelites towards the Promised Land. They almost reached the promised land but they had to cross an overflowing river before they could take the promised land. The river that was before them was the Jordan River. It was the harvest season and it was the time of the year when the Jordan River overflows its banks.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

The Israelites stayed at the bank of the Jordan River for three days. Then the Israelites were given some important instructions. They were going to soon cross the Jordan River. When they saw the priests carrying the Ark of Covenant, they had to start moving from their positions.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

The people of Israel should not come closer to the ark and there should be 2000-cubit (slightly above half a mile) distance between them and the ark. Joshua, the leader of Israel also told them to purify themselves because God was going to do a great miracle the next day. In the olden days, the Israelites purified themselves through many rituals. Some of the ways were taking a cleansing bath, offering sacrifices, abstaining from certain food, fasting and praying etc.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

The next morning the priests carried the Ark of God and started to move towards the Jordan River. God told Joshua to command the priests to take few steps into the Jordan River and stop there. As soon the feet of the priests touch the waters of the river, the river waters would be cutoff upstream and the waters of the river would stand as a heap on either side.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

The priests did just as Joshua commanded them and the waters of the Jordan River turned back. At one direction the waters of the Jordan River turned back to a great distance till a town called Adam. On the other direction, the waters of the Jordan River turned back and flowed into the Red Sea. So, the Jordan riverbed was dry and the people crossed the Jordan River through the dry riverbed. The Israelites crossed the Jordan River near the city of Jericho. The priests who were carrying the Ark of God, stood on the dry ground in the middle of the river bed as the Israelites passed by. They stood there until the entire nation crossed the Jordan River.

LESSON – 9

THE BUDDING OF AARON’S ROD

The Israelites were travelling through a large desert on their way to Canaan. There were many difficulties on the way. Moses their leader sorted everything with the help of God and led them through the desert. God told Moses to appoint his brother Aaron as the High Priest of Israel. A High Priest is someone specially appointed to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people and to bring messages from God. They even had special robes to wear.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org.

But some of the Israelite leaders were not happy when Aaron was appointed as the High Priest of Israel. They thought that they should have been given the chance to be the High Priest and not Aaron. So, some of the people started to protest against Moses and Aaron. Protest means speaking against and creating trouble. A man named Korah led the protest. He was also an important man in Israel. Many other leaders of Israel also joined him. Soon their number grew to 250.

st-takla.org

But God was not happy with Korah and his followers. God made the ground to open and swallow Korah and his followers. But God wanted to make it clear that he had chosen Aaron and his sons to be priests. So, God told Moses to ask the leaders of all the tribes of Israel to bring their rod and for the tribe of Levi, Aaron had to bring his rod.

st-takla.org

Then they had to put all the rods in front of the Ark of the Covenant. God told them that the rod of the man whom He has chosen as priest will grow flowers. When Moses looked the next morning, Aaron’s rod had not only flowered but almonds were growing out of it! There after the Israelite people did not complain about Aaron being the High Priest.
