LESSON – 8

AARON MAKES A GOLDEN CALF

After Joseph’s death, the new Pharaoh, the King of Egypt kept Israelites as slaves. God raised Moses as a leader of the Israelites to deliver them from Pharaoh and to bring them out. God told Moses to take them to a promised land called Canaan. The Israelites had to travel through a large desert before they could enter Canaan. The incident in today’s lesson happened when they were in the large Sinai desert on their way to Canaan.

In the first lesson we learnt about Adam’s sin and how God had challenged the serpent that a woman’s seed would crush the serpent’s seed. It was part of God’s plan that a Messiah or a Saviour would be born as a woman’s seed. God wanted a separated nation and a holy people for Himself, through whom the Saviour could be born. That’s why God chose the Israelites as a Holy nation and gave them many special laws including the ten commandments to keep them holy.

Two months after they left Egypt, the Israelites reached the Sinai Desert and they pitched their tents at the base of Sinai Mountain. God called Moses from the mountain to speak with him. God told Moses that he also wanted to speak directly with the Israelites so that they will have the fear of God. On the third day, there was thunder, lightning and a very loud trumpet sound, that the people trembled. All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire (Exodus 19: 9-25). Then God spoke to the Israelites and taught them the ten commandments and also gave many laws on how to lead a holy life as God’s chosen people. Read about it in Exodus 20th to 23rd chapters.

Then God once again called Moses to climb up the mountain so that He could give Moses the Stone tablets on which the ten commandments were inscribed by God himself. To receive these stone tablets, Moses climbed the Sinai Mountain and stayed there for forty days. He had left the Israelites in the care of his brother Aaron and another leader named Hur.

But even before the forty days were over, the Israelites started to feel impatient. They were worried that something might have happened to Moses on the top of Mount Sinai. Till that time, it was Moses who had led them and had spoken on their behalf with God. So, the Israelites felt insecure and told Aaron to make a god for them who could go before them and lead them in the desert. They even threatened to stone Aaron if he didn’t do as they told him.

Aaron told them to bring their gold ear rings. Aaron melted the gold ear rings and made an idol in the shape of a calf. The Israelites were very excited with the idol.

Aaron was very pleased and he even made an altar for it and proclaimed a festival for the calf the next day. The next day the people offered burnt offerings and peace offerings for the calf and there was feasting and dancing.

God told Moses to quickly climb down the mountain because the people had strayed from God’s way. God was so angry that he wanted to destroy them and make Moses into a great nation. But Moses interceded for them and prevented God from destroying them. After Moses climbed down the mountain, he burned with anger when he saw the calf. So, he threw the stone tablets in the ground and smashed them. Then he burnt the golden calf, ground it into a powder and made the Israelites to drink it.

God was angry with the Israelites and wanted to destroy them for making the golden calf. God promised Moses that, He will make Moses into a great nation. Moses did not agree, instead he pleaded for the Israelites, so God forgave them.

MIRIAM SPEAKS AGAINST MOSES

Moses, the leader of the Israelites had an elder brother named Aaron and an elder sister named Miriam. Yes, it is the same Miriam who was keeping a watch on her baby brother in the bulrush basket near the Nile River. Many years passed and Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt through a vast desert. It was a difficult and dangerous journey. Whenever there was any problem, the Israelites got upset with Moses and they complained.

Once Moses’ siblings Miriam and Aaron too got upset with Moses. Moses had married Zipporah, who was from an Ethiopian tribe (also called a Cushite). Moses’ sister Miriam spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman he had married. The exact reason why they got upset with Moses is not mentioned in the Holy Bible. It could have been because of certain customs the Ethiopian woman followed. Whatever the reason, Aaron and Miriam began to ridicule Moses and they said "Did God only talk to Moses? Didn't he talk to us, too?"

But guess who was hearing that! God heard Miriam and Aaron contending with Moses, so God asked them to come to the Tent of meeting. They went to the Tent and the Lord came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the Tent. God called for Aaron and Miriam. They both went forward. God asked them why they weren't afraid to say bad things about Moses. God explained that Moses was set apart, which means he is specially selected by God to lead a holy life and to serve God.  God spoke to Moses face to face, not in dreams or visions unlike the other prophets.

Then God was angry at Aaron and Miriam, so he left and the pillar of cloud was gone. Aaron looked at his sister Miriam and saw that God had punished her with leprosy. Aaron begged Moses to forgive them. Leprosy was a terrible disease. Usually, people with leprosy had to leave their family and live outside the camp. Moses pleaded with God to forgive her. The Lord told Moses to keep her outside the camp for seven days. So, Miriam had to leave the camp and stay outside.

She was healed after seven days and was accepted back into the camp.

(Notes: Even though, the Holy Bible doesn’t explicitly state the name of Moses’ wife in this passage, it is generally considered that the woman mentioned here is Zipporah).

THE PILLAR OF CLOUD AND THE PILLAR OF FIRE

God told Moses to bring the Israelites out of Egypt and to take them to a land called Canaan. But Pharaoh, the King of Egypt did not want to let go of the Israelites. So, God sent 10 plagues as punishments upon the Egyptians. The Pharaoh got scared and sent the Israelites away.

When the Israelites started their journey towards Canaan, God gave them special protection and He Himself went before them.

The Lord went before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light. When the Israelites came out of Egypt, they had to cross the Red Sea on their way. When Pharaoh, the King of Egypt saw that the Israelites could not cross the Red sea, he chased after them on his chariots. When the Israelites saw the chariots, they were terrified and prayed to God.

The angel of God, who was travelling in front of the Israelites, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved behind them separating the armies of Egypt and Israel.

Throughout the night, the cloud brought darkness to one side and light to the other side. God told Moses to stretch the rod in his hands. Immediately, a great wind separated the waters of the Red sea and there was dry land in between the separated waters. The Israelites walked through the dry land and crossed the Red sea.

The Pharaoh thought that he could also cross the red sea in the same way. God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the waters and the waters of the Red Sea closed. Pharaoh and his entire army were drowned in the Red Sea.

The Israelites thanked God for bringing them out of slavery and saving them from the evil king.

MANNA FOOD FROM HEAVEN

The Israelites lived in Egypt for a long time and they wanted to go back to their home country. But the King of Egypt, Pharaoh didn’t send them out easily. God did many miracles and the Israelites were soon on their way back home. It was a long journey.

Sweet Publishing / FreeBibleimages.org

This happened long ago when transports like aeroplane, train and buses were not available. There were no shops to buy food also. The Israelites had to find food on their own. But it was a big desert with not many trees or plants. Soon they were very hungry.

The leader of the Israelites, Moses prayed to God for food. God rained down a special food from heaven called manna.

Every morning God rained fresh manna except on the Sabbath day and the Israelites had to collect it. It looked like a white coriander seed. It tasted like wafer made with honey. The Israelites liked it very much and were happy.
