LESSON – 2

NOAH MAKES AN ARK

Adam and Eve, the first man and woman to be created by God had numerous sons and daughters but only three of their sons’ names Cain, Abel and Seth are mentioned in the Bible. Through them more and more people were born and men began to multiply on the earth. The first sin on earth started with Adam and Eve disobeying God’s law. God promised a Saviour for mankind who would be born as a woman’s seed. Satan somehow wanted to stop God’s salvation plan. During various stages in history, satan tried to corrupt humankind with sin. God cannot tolerate sin so he would punish the human beings and God’s salvation plan would not succeed.

By the time it reached ten generations from Adam, the wickedness of men had greatly increased on the earth. God was so upset that he was even sorry that he had created mankind. God wanted to destroy everything on earth. But there was a man named Noah who found favour with God. Noah was a righteous man and he had a close relationship with God. Noah had three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth. God revealed to Noah that he was going to destroy everyone on earth because the earth was filled with corruption and violence.

God told Noah to make an ark (a big boat) out of Gopherwood and cover it inside and outside with pitch. God even gave the measurement to tell Noah how big the ark should be. God also told Noah to make the ark with three decks. It should have a window and a door on the side. Noah had to find one male and one female of every kind of unclean animal and seven pairs of clean animals and take them into the ark. He also had to store food for all those animals. Noah did just as God told him.

Finally, when everything was ready, God told Noah to get into the ark with his family - his wife, their three sons and their wives. After everyone got inside the ark, God himself shut the door of the ark. Then it started to rain and it rained continuously for forty days and nights. The water springs found in the depth of the earth broke open (the water springs from where well water is obtained) and the waters poured from heaven also as though the windows of heaven were opened. Noah was 6oo years old at that time.

The water increased on the earth and it lifted the ark and the ark started to float. Even the high hills were covered by waters. Every living thing on earth outside the ark was killed. The waters raged on the earth for 150 days.

Then God remembered Noah and made a wind to blow which made the water to recede. The ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat. Noah sent out a dove to see whether it would find any dry land but the dove soon returned. Seven days later, Noah sent the dove again. This time the dove returned with an olive leaf.

After one year of being on the ark, God told Noah to come out of the ark. God also blessed them and told them to be fruitful and increase in number. Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices of clean animals and birds and worshipped God. God was pleased and promised not to destroy the earth again with a flood and kept the ‘rainbow’ on the sky as a sign of that promise.
